Charting a Path to Prevention: Assess Your Risk for Diabetes
Wellness
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and a great reminder for everyone to get an annual checkup and ensure your blood glucose level is in the normal range. Even if you don’t have symptoms, regular checkups and blood work are key to catching diseases like diabetes early and preventing more serious health issues down the road.
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), 7.3 million people in the United States—one in five people—aren’t aware that they’re living with diabetes and all the serious risks that this disease poses to their health, including possible damage to the heart, kidneys, hearing, vision, skin and feet.
Preventing and Managing Diabetes
If your annual checkup results show that you are pre-diabetic or if you have already received a diabetes diagnosis, there are many steps you can take to lower your risk or, in some cases, even reverse type 2 diabetes. Many of these steps involve altering your lifestyle and may not be easy, but given all of the health risks that diabetes poses, it is worth your time and effort and may even save your life.
