Don’t Put Healthy Habits on Vacation
Wellness
Summer vacations allow us to cast off the constraints of work and take a break from our many obligations. It can also lead to food temptations that we’ve disciplined ourselves against at home or disrupt our usual exercise routines. While none of us wants a “routine rut” to follow us on vacation, you can incorporate some fun, healthy vacation activities to keep your energy levels up so you return home feeling both accomplished and rejuvenated. Here are some tips for balancing relaxation with wellness.
Capitalize on your hotel benefits
Many hotels offer services with the health conscious in mind that go beyond the hotel gym, and several can be enjoyed by the entire family. Ask your concierge about bicycle rentals or guided nature tours in the area. Unique yoga experiences in inspiring environments can also keep the vacation vibe alive. If you are vacationing with children, check out age-appropriate pursuits the hotel might offer that your children can enjoy while you take on the adult activities, and enjoy family swim times for a beneficial health activity that still screams “vacation!” At mealtimes, restaurants in and out of hotels often include health-conscious menu options prepared with a gourmet flair, including flavorful, alcohol-free “mocktails” to help you curb your alcohol consumption.
Keep the sleep
You can ditch the work-week alarm clock while still getting optimum sleep. In fact, incorporating fun yet physical activities, such as swimming, bicycling, and hiking can prepare you for a good night’s rest that will leave you energized and refreshed in the morning. If you have some evening or night activities planned, indulge in the ultimate vacation luxury of the afternoon siesta. Also, if you have a few extra bucks and want to spoil yourself, a relaxing hotel spa treatment or massage can relieve any lingering stress brought from home or through traveling and help induce healthy sleep.
Don’t make it a vacation of denial
Just because you’re incorporating some sensible healthy activities doesn’t mean you need to embark on a vacation of denial. Want that decadent dessert? Go ahead! Some creamy French béchamel? Why not? If a few indulgent splurges add to your vacation experiences, don’t let guilt interfere. The key is not to stray too far from your healthy dietary habits too frequently. It’s not just about weight; it can also cause stomach discomfort and fatigue that may interfere with your vacation plans (attend our upcoming August webinar for more helpful information) – and that’s no fun for anyone!
Vacations are a time for letting go of your usual routines, which makes incorporating other fun activities you may not be able to do at home—or doing them in a different environment—an adventuresome and healthy part of your vacation experience.
