Explore: Summer Safety
Wellness
Summer is a time for playing and having fun. As you are enjoying your time outdoors, don’t forget to take some simple steps to protect yourself and your family.
Here are some tips from the American Red Cross and Centers for Disease Control to keep in mind.
New Water Safety
Many public pools and swimming areas are closed this summer. However, if your local pool, beach or lake is open, or if you’re creating your own watering hole, the following COVID-19 precautions should still be followed:
- Wear face coverings on land, but do not wear masks in the water, as it can make breathing difficult.
- Do not share goggles, nose clips, snorkels, or other personal gear.
- A kiddie or inflatable pool can be a great way to have fun, but be sure to provide constant supervision to children in and around the water.
- Flip any inflatable pools after use to prevent rainwater from gathering and creating a drowning hazard.
Sun & Heat Safety
Even if you’re protecting yourself from the coronavirus, that doesn’t mean you can ignore sun & heat protection. Remember these tips before you venture into the great outdoors:
- Limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
- Keep yourself well hydrated throughout the day.
- When outside, stay in a cool, shaded area, if possible.
- Wear light and loose clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun—such as long-sleeve shirts, pants, and broad-brim hats.
- Use broad spectrum sunscreens with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of 15 or higher regularly and as directed.
- Choose sunglasses labeled with a UVA/UVB rating of 100% to get the most UV protection.
- Don't overdo it—work, play, and exercise more lightly than usual.
Following these simple tips will help ensure your summer fun stays that way.
