The Best Gift for Your Accountant: Preparedness
Wellness
It happens every year—time to think about getting our 2023 tax materials organized and ready early in the new year. In addition to that organization, however, there are other things you can do now to make your or your accountant’s life easier:
- Don’t ignore their phone or email reminders. It’s the holiday season for them, too, and they are taking time out of the busy season to help keep you on track.Take a moment to acknowledge and thank them for their effort.
- Give yourself—and them—time if you want to discuss items that need to happen in December, such as reducing your tax bill by maximizing your IRS contributions or gifting money to children.
- Make sure charity donations meant for 2023 deductions are made and show up in December. If mailing, give yourself plenty of time. Using a credit or debit card may be a safer option.
- Set a time to discuss what you’d like to see next year. Arm yourself with information from Fidelity on tax-smart investing and meet with your accountant so you’re both on the same page by this time next year.
- Pay your preparer’s bill on time. And, around the holidays, some individuals even think about giving a monetary tip to favorite professionals in their lives, such as accountants, hair dressers, etc.
- Refer friends. A referral is the best compliment and a welcome gift.
And, if you don’t already use automated software to help you track and organize your income and expenses, take a look at some programs this month – because preparedness is a gift to both of you!
