Charting a Path to Prevention: Mental Well-Being – Habits to Build Resiliency
Wellness
Right now, we could all use a strategy to help us achieve better mental health and keep our minds focused on better times ahead. Start by practicing habits that build resiliency.
Building resiliency begins by taking care of yourself, which is an important step to living better and preventing illness and disease. Here are just a few ways you can accomplish this in the new year:
Stay Close to Others
Part of taking good care of yourself is spending time with family members, co-workers and friends, whether it’s by phone, Zoom or sitting outside, socially distanced at a park. Other people can be a great source of emotional support and allow you to identify with someone else who is going through similar challenges and struggles. Sharing the good and the bad with another person you trust can help you stay mentally strong.
Eat Healthy and Exercise
We all know it’s true: Feeding your body junk food day after day and being sedentary does not help you physically or mentally. In fact, taking care of yourself physically can have a direct impact on your mental health and determine how quickly you are able to bounce back during hard times. Take baby steps like eating more veggies or walking for 20 minutes each day. Healthy body, healthy mind, happier you!
Practice Positive Self Talk
You choose how you think about a situation and the things you tell yourself every moment of every day. Try reframing what you say. For instance, instead of saying to yourself “things are never going to get better!”, choose a more logical and positive thought like, “things are tough right now, but they will get better.” A more positive mindset will help your outlook and your mood.
Control What You See and Hear
Taking charge of what you read, watch and listen to is critical to maintaining a positive outlook and making it through tough times. Yes, it’s good to stay informed, but don’t just expose yourself to anything, at any time. Choose what time of day you want to read or watch the news, and choose your news sources carefully. In general, it’s also a good idea to limit your screen time for better mental health.
Quiet your Mind
In addition to getting exercise, try taking time each day to practice a relaxation technique like meditation, yoga or simply walking in nature. Quieting your mind can help you improve your mental health and stay on track with your goals each day. Even 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference!
